JAY – A public breakfast will be offered Sunday starting after Mass or shortly after 9 a.m. at St. Rose Parish Church to raise funds for a partner church in Haiti.

Parishioners of St. Joseph Church in Farmington and St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay have a Haiti committee charged with raising money for the St. Laurent Parish in Les Cayes, Haiti, said Janet Brackett of Farmington. Money sent monthly helps build a health clinic there and pays school teachers.

Brackett is one of three Farmington parishioners who leave for Haiti on Feb. 11. Lori Richards and Janice David will accompany her on a goodwill mission to see how the people are doing, how the health clinic is progressing and how the partnership is working, she said Thursday. They also hope to get into the schools and will take along supplies for the clinic and school.

While each travels at their own expense, the churches raise funds through the breakfast, a bottle drive and a monthly collection from parishioners, said Amedee Maurais of Jay, a member of the Haiti committee who is organizing Sunday’s breakfast. Some members of St. Joseph will help with the breakfast.

The menu includes scrambled eggs, bacon, donut holes, muffins, fruit salad, toast and beverages offered for $5, he said. A basket for additional donations to help Haitians will also be available.

Over the past few years, about eight parishioners made the pilgrimage to Haiti, Brackett said.

“It’s always an adventure and we’re getting excited,” she said.
