It was a particularly enjoyable occasion last evening, when one hundred and sixty club women and guests met at the DeWitt Hotel for the annual banquet, held under the auspices of the Women’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County. As each member of the Union had the privilege of inviting her husband or friend, there were a large number of gentlemen in the party. The guests of honor were Governor and Mrs. B.M. Fernald. Governor Fernald in his brief address at the close of the evening called the attention of the gentlemen to the fact that this was the first time they had ever been permitted to attend one of these banquets, and he presumed the thanks for the invitation this time was all due to him.

50 years ago, 1959

The last available space in the Professional Building, 145 Lisbon St., has been leased to the Civil Reading Club Inc., according to Charles Levin, Lewiston realtor.

The penthouse suite at the building has never before been leased for office space. Paul Tuler of the Boston office of the magazine subscription concern has signed the lease and will return to Lewiston on Monday to set up an organization of approximately 50 youths. All will come from the Lewiston and Auburn area as will the office manager.

25 years ago, 1984

A donation to the Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute will highlight the agenda when the State Board of Education meets at the Civic Center, Augusta, Feb. 7-8. On the consent agenda is consideration of approval of a donation of scrap stainless steel by Bachman Industries Inc., of Lewiston to the Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Auburn.

New business items include consideration of a policy governing the development of VTI affirmative action programs and of responses to recommendations from the Maine Advisory Council on Vocational Education in its 1983 annual report.
