DURHAM – A local woman escaped serious injury Saturday morning when she fell asleep at the wheel and struck a utility pole, Androscoggin Deputy Sheriff Craig MacMillan said.

Chelsea Stewart, 22, was driving south on Royalsborough Road toward Freeport when she fell asleep and her car drifted off the road into a utility pole at 1619 Royalsborough Road, MacMillan said.

The impact knocked out telephone and electrical service to the residents at that address and caused a television set to blow up, he said.

Stewart complained of pain and was transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick by Durham Fire and Rescue. Her 2000 Honda Civic was demolished in the 5:43 a.m. crash.
