OTISFIELD – Two towns will show their love of snow over the Valentine’s Day weekend by holding winter carnivals.
The fourth annual Otisfield Winter Carnival will take place on Friday and Saturday, while the ninth annual Naples Winter Carnival will be held on Saturday and Sunday.
The Otisfield carnival kicks off with a variety show at the Otisfield Community School at 6 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, there will be a fishing derby from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thompson and Pleasant lakes. Registration and weigh-in will take place at the New Outpost. The registration cost is $10 per person, but no license is needed to fish during the day since it is a state free fishing day.
The Spurr’s Corner Church will hold a free breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The town beach will host ice skating and carnival games from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., horse-drawn wagon rides from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a free lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A sledding party, snow sculpture contest, and craft making and cookie decorating activities will take place at the town office from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The evening concludes with a free dinner at the Otisfield Community School from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., after which prizes for the fishing derby and snow sculptures will be awarded.
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all events.
In Naples, the carnival will hold its first annual fishing derby on Long Lake on Saturday. Registration will cost $15 for adults and $3 for children, and prizes will be awarded for the biggest brown trout. To register, contact Dean Sawyer at 885-2292 or [email protected].
Snowmobile radar runs will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and registration for a poker run will be open between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Save Sebago Cove will host a milfoil education booth and a raffle with a grand prize of $1,000.
Other activities include helicopter rides, a broom ball tournament at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the town gym, an antique snowmobile show, and snow sculptures. A free shuttle will run between the town dock and the town gym.
A fireworks show will take place over the lake at 6 p.m. on Saturday, and be followed by a party at the Tiki Bar at 8 p.m. The party will include the raffling and auctioning of two pies to be thrown at Naples Town Manager Derik Goodine. Proceeds will go to the Muddy River Sno Seekers.
