The throb of deep bass filled the hallways of Sherwood Heights Elementary School on Tuesday evening. Small children giggled and whirled inside a semi-circle of brightly colored instruments. An African drum circle had moved into the gymnasium. “It should be a fun night,” music teacher Mike Davis said before the event.

The drumming circle was a final piece of a fellowship that allowed Davis to travel to Africa in 2007. He learned the art of African drumming and how to make his own instrument. On Tuesday night, he and Portland hand percussionist Annegret Baier brought the music to Auburn.

Davis and Baier showed people of all ages simple rhythms, how to strike the drum properly and the differences in the drums. By the end of the night, they put it all together and made music.
