This time, Adrien Lemay finished what he started.
Two starts after a 66-save performance went for naught in an overtime loss, Lemay suited up again Wednesday for the Lewiston Maineiacs, his third consecutive start. Matt Bourdeau got him a goal in the second period, and Lemay did the rest.
The 19-year-old free-agent acquisition stopped 43 more pucks Wednesday – every shot he faced – and Bourdeau’s goal early in the second period was enough as the Maineiacs upended the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 1-0 in a pivotal contest with playoff implications.
The Maineiacs began Wednesday on the outside looking in in the four-team race for the final two playoff spots in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Sixteen of the league’s 18 teams make the playoffs, and Lewiston began the day with 38 points, one back of Baie-Comeau and Val d’Or, which had 39 each.
A win over Baie-Comeau on Wednesday lifted Lewiston into 15th position, one ahead of Val d’Or and Baie-Comeau, though both the Foreurs and Drakkar have games in hand on the Maineiacs.
Lewiston has played 57 games, the most of any team in the league. Baie-Comeau has played only 54, while Val d’Or stands at 55.
Wednesday, it was again the Adrien Lemay show. Peppered early and often, the Maineiacs’ keeper faced 10 shots in the opening frame, 13 more in the second, and 19 in the third, earning the game’s first star for his performance.
Bourdeau’s goal came just 1:41 into the second period, and was a rebound in front of Baie-Comeau keeper Nathan Dunnett.
Lewiston concludes its two-week, five-game road swing Friday in Shawinigan. The team’s next home event is Sunday’s skills competition at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
