Charlie Diviney, an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer with the Restorative Justice Project, gave an overview of the project to the Introduction to Corrections class at Central Maine Community College in Auburn. The project is an innovative new approach to corrections. Typically, an offender is incarcerated as a punitive measure or to receive treatment. The philosophy of restorative justice enables those offenders who have taken responsibility for their actions to make amends to their victims and the community. At the center of the process is the community resolution conference, which Diviney simulated with the class. One of the ground rules stipulated that only a person with the “talking stick” could speak. Diviney is pictured with the talking stick.
