WILTON – Fire destroyed a small house at 110 Weld Road early Thursday morning.

Wilton Fire Department was called about 1:15 a.m. to the 16- by 20-foot house next to the town garage, said fire Capt. Kyle Ellis.

The blaze was caused by a cooking stove with an oven that was left on, he said. Owner Jan Stinson had been at the house cleaning Wednesday preparing to rent the home.

A fire marshal was called in Thursday and agreed with the determination of the fire’s cause, Ellis said.

While fighting the blaze, firefighters worried about the safety of another home about 12 feet away. They also had to wait for Central Maine Power Co. to cut a live wire that was arcing, he said.

The building was insured. Damage was estimated at $70,000.

Firefighters from Farmington, East Dixfield, Jay and Livermore Falls provided mutual aid.
