LEWISTON – Police arrested a Wood Street man Thursday night after a mattress was set on fire inside his apartment.
Isaiah Cruz, 27, was charged with arson about 7:30 p.m., nearly six hours after flames ripped through a kitchen at 107 Wood St.
Cruz was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he remained Thursday night.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the mattress fire in the second-floor apartment after they were called to the scene at about 1 p.m.
Louis Arroyo, who lives in an adjacent apartment, said he was about to have lunch when neighbors told him to get out of his apartment. He heard the smoke detector from next door, he said.
Firefighters cut a hole in the roof to blow smoke out of the building, fire Capt. Laurier Morin said. No injuries were reported.
Fire crews called for help from the Lewiston police Criminal Investigation Division.
Cruz was questioned by police Detective Lee Jones and fire Investigator Paul Ouellette before he was charged.
Ouellette said the fire was contained to the kitchen, but he did not say how it was set. It was not disclosed whether the mattress was in the kitchen when it went up in flames or if it was moved there as it burned.
