RANGELEY – A former Rangeley man has been charged with not registering as a sex offender after moving from town about a month ago, police Chief Dennis Leahy said.

Police had received information that Chad Alexander, 21, had moved out of the area and didn’t register as a sex offender, Leahy said.

Alexander has two sex assault convictions, including one in 2006 when he was convicted of sexual assault of a minor in Vermont. Alexander had met the 15-year girl over the Internet at Myspace.com. He was arrested in Maine that time on a Vermont warrant.

Alexander is also listed on Maine’s Sex Offender Registry for a 2004 Maine conviction of gross sexual assault of a person under 14 years old.

In July 2007, Rangeley police charged Alexander with violating his probation after police discovered an underage girl at his Rangeley residence.

In a joint investigation by Rangeley police and South Portland police, Rangeley police officer Brian Hughes charged Alexander this week at the Franklin County jail with failing to register as a sex offender, Leahy said Thursday.

Alexander was being held at the jail after Franklin County Sheriff’s Department picked him up on a probation violation on Feb. 6.
