AUBURN -The Maine Games will hold its annual national anthem audition Saturday, April 4, at Great Falls Performing Arts Center, 30 Academy St.

Online applications must be received by March 25. Go to www.mainegames.org for more information and to submit your application.

Besides being named the Maine Games national anthem singer for 2009, the winner will receive a Maine Games trophy and the opportunity to sing at Hadlock Field prior to a Portland Sea Dogs game. The top singer will also have a chance to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Fenway Park this year – however, the Boston Red Sox reserve the right of final approval and will choose the performance date.

Singers will be given 90 seconds to perform their most traditional, patriotic rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” for a panel of judges.

This year, the Maine Games is also offering an essay contest for students in grades 5-8 and 9-12. The topic is “What ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ means to me.” Authors of the top essays will be invited to read their entries at the audition.

Each year, Maine Games provides a statewide, multi-event Olympic-style sports festival for amateur athletes of all ages and abilities.
