I hope the proposal for a $4,300 coupon toward the purchase of a newer, more fuel-efficient vehicle will be well-scrutinized before being implemented. More than likely, the cost of purchasing any newer, fuel-efficient vehicle will increase well above the coupon’s value, and buyers can expect to pay more for the other many incidentals.

Eventually, for those of us already financially strained, the privilege to own and operate a vehicle on Maine highways will certainly be just for the privileged.
