This is in response to Chuck Martin (Feb. 11), who responded to my letter printed Jan. 27. I would like to clarify some misconceptions he has regarding my political ilk and the intent of my previous letter.
I stated my pride for this country after witnessing Barack Obama’s inauguration. In no way was I disparaging the service of the previous president. I was simply sharing that I was energized by the overwhelming number of spectators and voters who cared enough about the future of the U.S.A. to have ignored the biases of the past and who were moved enough to step up and exercise their rights as citizens of this country to express their views and their passion for the betterment of us all.
While I may not agree with Martin’s politics, I certainly honor his right to speak, as I honor the rights and privileges of all citizens to speak out, stand up and act as responsible Americans.
I hope and pray that, as a nation, we will stay the course and continue to stay involved in assisting elected officials to hear us and to act on what they hear.
I will always believe that the greatness of the people of this country lies in their ability to transcend partisan politics and get back to the business of making this country everything it should be.
Petty bias, hateful prejudice and arrogant assumptions will not get us there.
