LEWISTON – Allie Lewandowski touched first to narrowly edge out two other rivals to capture the gold medal in the girls’ 100-yard breaststroke at the Class B girls’ swimming championship Monday at Bates College.
Lewandowski’s winning time of 1 minute, 11.27 seconds was .08 seconds ahead of Abbey Ridge of Yarmouth, while Washington Academy’s Kate Chang was third in 1:11.37.
The performance by the St. Dom’s sophomore led the Saints to a ninth-place finish in Class B. Falmouth easily won the team crown with 319 points, with Greely second at 295 and McAuley third at 239. The Saints scored 95 points.
Lewandowski also finished third in the 200 individual medley in 2:23.10.
Naomi McGonagill also qualified for the championship round for the Saints. She placed fourth in the 500 freestyle and seventh in the 100 backstroke.
Lewandowski and McGonagill helped the Saints qualify for the championship round in the 200 medley relay. Joined by Emily Rioux and Alyse Carney, the Saints relay team placed eighth.
Lewiston girls 12th
ORONO – The Lewiston relay team of Chelsey Provencher, Allysa Thomas, Katherine Tirabassi and Amy Morin advanced to the championship round and placed seventh to lead the Devils to a 12th-place finish in the Class A girls’ swimming championship.
Cape Elizabeth dominated the meet to win with 306 points. Morse (243), Messalonskee (240), Bangor (232) and Scarborough (156) rounded out the top five.
Lewiston totaled 68 points, while Edward Little was 17th with 45.
Melissa Paione of Edward Little was the only local swimmer to reach the championship round (top 8). The EL freshman placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke, 1.56 seconds out of first. Paione also recorded a sixth in the 200 IM.
Provencher added a 13th in the 200 IM and 16th in the 500 freestyle. Other Lewiston scorers included Tirabassi, who was 12th in the 200 freestyle and 13th in the 100 backstroke, and Thomas, who was 13th in the 100 breaststroke.
