Dear Sun Spots: Another bird story! In recent days I have a flock of robins and cardinals come to my front sills. They have been eating red berries that were decorations on boughs from Christmas. Also, they are eating frozen crab apples from my tree in the backyard. Poor things are starving. I have never seen so many birds stay so close to my home and don’t care about the bird feeders like the chickadees do. – No Name, Lisbon.

Answer: Sun Spots found a similar question posed to Laura Erickson, an “American Robin Expert” at www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/robin/ExpertAnswer05.html. She noted that the birds manage to achieve a “balanced diet” over an annual cycle rather than day by day. So, while they require the protein from worms and insects during the time of year the females are producing eggs or when they are molting, they have limited activity during the winter and are well sustained with only berries and crab apples. This is perhaps the reason they are not interested in the bird feeders.

Dear Sun Spots: A while ago someone was looking for Barbie doll shoes and boots. I have quite a few pairs – not new, they were played with by two little girls. As I recall, that person was interested in buying them. – No Name, No Town.

Answer:
Sun Spots couldn’t locate a request for Barbie doll items. Hopefully, the person who would like them will write to the column.
