HARTFORD – Selectmen from Hartford and Canton will meet Feb. 26 to discuss terms of a maintenance agreement for the Lake Anasagunticook Dam, Chairman Jack Plumley told board members Thursday night.

The town voted last June to give $20,000 to Canton’s effort to take the dilapidated structure by eminent domain. The dam is on Whitney Brook, an outlet on the northeast side of the lake in Canton.

Plumley said Thursday that he thinks Hartford should be considered part owner of the dam.

A proposed agreement between the towns stipulates that a committee to oversee maintenance of a new dam would have three voting members from Canton and two from Hartford. It also states that costs would be split evenly after the dam is built.

Canton was given a year or more from when it acquired the dam last July to repair it at an estimated cost of $200,000 to $300,000, Malcolm Ray, chairman of the Dam Core Committee, said then. The committee, made up of residents of Canton and Hartford, was formed to study ways to solve the dam problem.

The Dam Core Committee has suggested each town have two voting members and the Canton Water District be an adviser only with no voting privileges.

An informational meeting on dam issues will be held at 10 a.m. March 7 at the Hartford Town Hall for Hartford and Canton residents.

In other business Thursday, Plumley announced a public forum Feb. 25 on changes to Maine’s Site Location of Development Law. It will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Bethel Inn Conference Center in Bethel.
