KENNEBUNKPORT, (AP) – Rather than put it on display, a New York restaurant has decided to release a very large and old lobster into the cold waters off Maine.

Nicknamed Craig, the lobster is to be set free Saturday in Kennebunkport after being turned over to animal rights activists by Halu Japanese Restaurant & Grill in Brooklyn. Craig is estimated to be about the same size and age as George, a 140-year-old, 20-pound lobster that was put back in the sea in Kennebunkport last month by Manhattan’s City Crab and Seafood.

Halu had planned to keep Craig on display, but had a change of heart and has agreed to let People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals return it to its natural home.

Lawmakers reject cell phone bills

AUGUSTA (AP) -Maine lawmakers are saying no thanks to a bill to clamp down on motorists who text message or use hand-held cell phones while they are driving.

The Transportation Committee on Thursday voted 9-1 against a bill to ban drivers’ use of hand-held cell phones, except in emergencies. The committee vote leaves the bill unlikely to pass.

However, lawmakers postponed a vote on a more general bill to create a “distracted driver” law, leaving it alive for further discussion.

Thief targets old telephone poles

OAKLAND (AP) – Old telephone poles are being swiped right out of the ground in central Maine.

According to FairPoint Communications, about 35 poles have been cut and stolen. The thefts in the town of Oakland began last fall and stopped in the early winter but have resumed as snowbanks have retreated.

The poles had no wires attached to them and were to be removed later.

They had been trimmed to 12 feet tall, and were left behind when the company put in replacement poles next to them.

FairPoint supervisor Simon Thorne said the pressure-treated poles aren’t good for burning because they contain preservatives. He speculated someone might be taking them to use for framework.
