Kudos to the Leavitt Area High School teacher, Sharon Hathaway, who initiated the “Money” course in the school curriculum (featured Jan. 30). It should be done at all high schools as a mandatory class.

In working with folks who are struggling to pay bills just for the necessities in life, young adults are often unaware just how much it actually costs to live on their own. Working in the credit department of an oil company, the stories of money problems are escalating. “Saving for a rainy day” was ingrained by my parents of the Depression era. Unless one lived through this tightening of belts, the reality of today’s economy has left many folks unprepared for riding out the storm.

Teens crave guidelines and look to adults in their lives who are good examples for them. Let’s all band together and realize young people watch what we do.

Walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
