AUGUSTA (AP) – Gov. John Baldacci says the federal economic stimulus package that will funnel hundreds of millions of dollars into Maine won’t erase the state’s obligation to maintain fiscal discipline.
In his weekly radio address Saturday, Baldacci said the state must continue to seek out efficiencies at all levels of government and control the growth of state programs to match available revenues.
The governor said “the money is helpful, but it’s temporary.”
He emphasized the need for quick action on federally funded projects so people get back to work immediately and start spending money that can get the economy rolling again.
Baldacci said White House estimates suggest that the stimulus could create 15,000 jobs in Maine, which would equal the number lost last year as the recession deepened.
