RAYMOND (AP) – Maine officials are urging people to use caution when driving on ice-covered lakes after three vehicles and three snowmobiles broke through the ice on Sebago Lake over the weekend.
The mishaps occurred during the annual Sebago Lake fishing derby, a two-day event that draws thousands of people to the region.
No injuries were reported.
, but Warden Service Sgt. Tim Spahr said the most dangerous accident took place when a pickup truck with two people crashed through a pressure ridge on the ice. The occupants escaped, but the truck sank in water that was more than 100 feet deep.
In another case, a snowmobile operator was cited for trying to ride across a patch of open water on the lake. The snowmobile sank, but the operator and passenger made it to safety.
