On Wednesday, February 11, at Elm Street School, the seventh and eighth graders on the Math Team decided to put joy into another’s day. Along with the help of our fabulous math teacher, Sharon Goss, and the Gifted And Talented Education teacher, Karen Downing, we spent our class period making valentine baskets. Last week, the Math Team had been given a challenge from our teachers to actually construct one of the baskets. They are made from red and pink paper, but kind of confusing to make. In the beginning I was lost, but later on I got the hang of it and even completed one basket. After the group who was putting the baskets together was finished, they passed it off to the next group in the assembly line, the group that was gluing the handles on. The last step was the filling. Our last group placed Hershey Kisses and Peppermints into the baskets.
Later this week, our teacher will be visiting Buckram Oaks Nursing Home in Mechanic Falls to give all the 70 baskets to the elderly living there. I thought it was a caring, touching thing to do and I was very pleased with all the kids who got involved. So, this Valentine’s Day, do something special for one another. Something as simple as a sweet valentine is enough to put a smile on one’s face.
