GRAY (AP) – The removal of the last coin basket lane on the Maine Turnpike marked the end of an era on Wednesday.

The coin-only lane at the turnpike’s southbound entrance in Gray was converted to a dedicated E-ZPass lane after the morning commute.

Maine Turnpike Authority spokesman Bruce Pelletier says fewer than 10 percent of motorists used the coin-only lanes, with the vast majority of commuters paying electronically with E-ZPass.

With the change, there are now 32 dedicated E-ZPass lanes on the Maine Turnpike. Motorists can still pay with coins, or bills, at “any vehicle” lanes staffed with toll collectors.
