FARMINGTON – Michael James Spiotta, “Mike”, 58, of Jay, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Franklin Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, Tuesday, Feb. 24, having died of an apparent heart attack.

He was born Sept. 13, 1950, in Batavia, N.Y., the son of Nicholas and Betty (Frisby) Spiotta. He was a 1968 graduate of Batavia High School and earned a degree in business administration from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1974 and was stationed in Germany. He was the swim director at the Y in Batavia, N.Y., and moved to Maine, where he held the same position at the Winthrop Y, a place where he met his soul mate and best friend, Fran Durrell, whom he married on June 19, 1976, in Augusta.

He worked at IP Co., Boise in Rumford and owned and operated B & D Fire Protection for several years. He later returned to Verso, where he currently was working in the water treatment department. Beginning at its inception in 1991, he was also a sales representative for Adept Screen Printing in Lisbon.

Mike was devoted to his family and his community, having served as past president of the Jay-Livermore Falls Rotary Club and having served as past chair and treasurer of the Jay-Niles Memorial Library in North Jay. He was a member of the F.E. Builders Bowling Team in Wilton for many years and was a life-long Yankee and Browns fan. He was an avid beekeeper and also enjoyed collecting baseball memorabilia, reading Stephen King novels, watching old movies, tinkering in his workshop and spending quality time with his family and their dog, Molly.

He is survived by his wife, Fran of Jay; two sons, Patrick and his wife, Mel, of Wilton and Adam and his wife, Erica, of Mount Vernon; his parents, Nicholas and Betty Spiotta of Batavia, N.Y.; a brother, Nicholas of Batavia, N.Y.; two sisters, Julie Harasimowicz and her husband, Mark, of Batavia, N.Y., and Francesca Spiotta of Syracuse, N.Y.
