AUGUSTA (AP) – A new study documents an increasing rate of warming in Maine over the last century and a trend toward warmer temperatures in the state’s future.

The report presented to Gov. John Baldacci on Wednesday says regional sea surface temperatures have risen nearly 2 degrees since 1970, and precipitation has increased, as well. The report also says the sea level is rising faster, and that peak river flows and ice-out on Maine lakes come earlier.

The University of Maine’s report comes in response to Baldacci’s request in 2007 for a preliminary analysis of the effects of climate change in Maine.

The scientists who contributed to the report say Maine is taking steps to address climate change but they say more needs to be done.
