ROCKWOOD – The Maine Warden Service on Friday was investigating a snowmobile crash that left a Massachusetts man in serious condition.
Michael Sargent, 25, of Bedford, was traveling at an estimated 50 mph when he struck a mogul and went airborne, warden officials said.
Sargent was heading toward North East Carry and Kokadjo when he neared a narrow bridge with two snow moguls near it, according to Maine Warden Mike Favreau.
Sargent hit one of the moguls, and his snowmobile traveled vertically into the air. He fell off the sled and landed on his back. The snowmobile landed on its rear taillight near Sargent and broke into pieces, Favreau said. The 2 p.m. accident occurred about 6 miles outside Rockwood near Kineo. The Maine Warden Service was notified at 3:15 p.m. The incident is under investigation. Speed was a factor, Favreau said.
Emergency responders were told that Sargent initially couldn’t move his legs. He was conscious and talking to his brother, Mark, his father, David, and other family members and friends who were snowmobiling with him, Favreau said. Sargent suffered back and internal injuries, Favreau said. He was wearing a helmet.
Rockwood Rescue took Sargent from the trail and they were met by C.A. Dean Ambulance, which took Sargent to Mayo Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. LifeFlight was called to the hospital but was grounded due to rain. It was expected that Sargent would be moved to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor once the weather improved.
