NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) – A Palmer man has been cleared of second degree murder after he ran over a man who confronted him at a Belchertown bar and used racist language.

But Andre Dewdney was found guilty Friday of leaving the scene of an accident involving a death, which carries a prison sentence of at least a year.

Witnesses testified that in November 2007, Joseph Mailhott approached Dewdney about buying marijuana. But they said Mailhott became angry when Dewdney, who is black, said he didn’t have any.

Witnesses said Mailhott used racist language, then knocked Dewdney’s hat off outside the bar. Mailhott got in front of the vehicle as Dewdney tried to leave and was run over.

Dewdney drove away, and later said he didn’t think he’d killed Mailhott when he hit him.
