I have enjoyed recent articles of reminiscences and local history in David Sargent’s “River Views” column. However, I am disappointed by his very amorphous treatment of the naming of Lewiston in his recent column (Feb. 24).

It is highly likely that Lewiston was named for Job Lewis, one of the Pejepscot Proprietors, the company of Boston investors who owned this area. I lay out the case for that conclusion in my recent book, “Frontier to Industrial City: Lewiston Town Politics, 1768-1863.”

My analysis of this topic may also be found on the Web site of the Androscoggin Historical Society at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~meandrhs/ahsnl/016_Oct1995_Newsletter.pdf.

In fact, about 1995, the Society published articles on the naming of each of the towns. The newsletter articles may be found on the Society’s Web site via an index that provides the name of each town.
