PORTLAND (AP) – The Coast Guard has called off its search for a New Hampshire man who disappeared while kayaking off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire.

The Coast Guard suspended the search Sunday morning after covering more than 400 square miles of ocean.

The search for 59-year-old Hamilton Wood of Hopkinton, N.H., began Friday night. Wood was last heard from about 3 p.m. Friday when he called his wife and the Coast Guard to say he was leaving the Isles of Shoals, which is about six miles offshore, to paddle back to the mainland.

Wood’s kayak was found near Boon Island off Maine on Saturday morning, but Wood was never located by the Coast Guard or state and local agencies that assisted in the search.
