UNIONTOWN, Penn. – Sophomore point guard Matt Sceviour drained a game-high 26 points and all five CMCC starters hit for double figures in an 89-72 victory over Penn State Fayette in the first round of United States Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs on Wednesday.

Tyler Smithgall, who was named USCAA All-American prior to the game, turned in a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Lyons also doubled up with 11 points and team-high 12 boards. Nate Damm canned 17 points and Cam Angell added 10 points, eight boards and a team-high five assists.

With the Lions focused on shutting down Angell and Smithgall, Sceviour was freed up to drive the lane, hit uncontested jumpers and bury a pair of 3-pointers.

The Mustangs led by nine at the break and brought the pressure throughout the second half, forcing the Lions into poor shot selection and 23 turnovers.

Greg Johnson paced the Lions with 17 points while Jonathan Eicher added 16 and Josh Thomas registered 15.

The Mustangs move on to face Penn State Beaver in the second round Thursday at 8 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Penn State Beaver 79, CMCC 53

McKEESPORT, Penn. – Jasmine Green registered 18 points, nine rebounds and nine assists to lead Penn State Beaver in a 79-53 victory over Central Maine Community College in the first round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association women’s tournament on Wednesday.

The Mustangs, who secured a tournament berth by defeating Southern Maine CC in the Yankee Conference championship game, were overmatched on both ends of the court as the Nittany Lions dominated the boards, creating second and third chances that led to a 37-18 halftime advantage.

The Mustangs, who struggled to find open passing lanes, committed 29 turnovers and were limited to 34 percent shooting from the floor.

Tiffany Seams hit three from behind the arc and finished with a team-high 17 points. Michelle Holmquist added 13 points and six rebounds and Britney Salley registered eight points.

Heather Sandusky tossed in 18 points for the Nittany Lions while Ashley Jenkins and Tasia McCargo scored 11 apiece.

UMA 69, Pennsylvania 64

L.T. Williams poured in 30 points and Deon Cheers and Herbie Davis sank clutch free throws in the final minute to send Maine-Augusta to a 69-64 opening-round victory over Pennsylvania College of Technology in the USCAA men’s basketball tournament.

The UMA Moose (13-19) led by as many as 10 points in the second half, before the Wildcats of Pennsylvania (17-11) fought back with full-court pressure to grab a 63-62 lead. But a basket by Williams, and free throws by Cheers and Davis sealed the victory.

Davis finished with 15 points and Cheers had 13.

UMA meets No. 1 seed Williamson Free School on Thursday in the semifinals.
