CHESTERVILLE – Town meeting voters will head to the polls from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday at Town Hall to fill a selectman position.

Incumbent Craig Stickney wants to keep his seat. He’s being challenged by Orin Knowles II.

The meeting will reconvene at 7 p.m. after a town meeting supper to continue action on the warrant’s 57 articles. One would provide pay for firefighters. Another would amend shoreland zoning ordinances.

A third deals with payment of the county budget assessment, Stickney said.

With the county changing its budget to a fiscal year, towns are deciding how to pay for the six months from January through June leading up to the new fiscal year. Selectmen and Budget Committee members recommend using $38,000 from surplus rather than financing the amount, he said.

Stickney also expects some discussion on an article that asks the town to raise $8,850 to pay firefighters. That amount would cover approximately 20 firefighters including the chief, assistant chief and deputy chief.

Up to now volunteer firefighters haven’t been paid, he said.

If voters agree, selectmen will decide how the pay is disbursed. Some leaning toward a stipend, he said. Payments would begin in March.

The proposed town budget is $408,462, approximately $15,000 more than last year. If approved as is, the budget is under the state tax cap by $6.39.

“It’s a challenge to prepare the budget without raising taxes,” he said. Selectmen and budget panel members asked that the town not exceed the tax cap.

Voters will be asked to raise more money for road work. The cost of fuel and salt boosted winter road work spending by $5,000 over last year.

Amendments to the shoreland zoning ordinance would align it with state regulations. Brenda Medcoff, the town’s code enforcement officer, will be there to answer questions, he said.
