Fundraising event

LEWISTON – The USM Leadership/Sustainability Study Abroad Group will have a fundraising event from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Fish Bones American Grill, 70 Lincoln St.

All are welcome to attend the free event, which will feature an auction of items received from area artists and businesses. Captive Elements Art House will display art and photos available for purchase. There will be hors d’oeurves and musical entertainment.

Funds raised will support the group’s trip to Costa Rica, where they will speak with and interview leaders and professors involved in the country’s economic sustainability.

Rescheduled

LEWISTON – The Lewiston Senior Citizens meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, March 9, at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St. Lunch will be at noon for members who had previously reserved tickets. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m., followed by bingo.

Silent auction

AUBURN – Auburn Public Library is conducting a silent auction until noon Friday, March 27. Items include electronics, gift baskets and gift certificates. Proceeds will go toward the library’s many services.

Book discussion

AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston Art and Literature Club will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, March 9, at the Woman’s Literary Union, 19 Elm St.

The program will be a participation/discussion about the life of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Stowe was the author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” in 1852, depicting life for African-Americans under slavery.

Facilitators will be Marguerite Powers and Helen Archambault. Hostesses will be Mrs. Wilfred Godin, Mrs. Maurice Laurendeau and Marguerite Powers.

Lodge meetings

DURHAM – Acacia Lodge Building Association will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at the Durham Lodge Hall, Route 136.

It is an open meeting and all members are invited. A stated lodge meeting will follow.

Library program

AUBURN – John Henderson of Hometown History Works will discuss the Irish Potato Famine of 1847 and how it influenced migration to the United States, including Lewiston and Auburn, at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 12. The presentation will be held in the Androscoggin Room at the Auburn Public Library.

Participants will construct a diorama of Auburn’s Patch or Lewiston’s Gas House Patch. Irish soda bread and other light refreshments will be served.

All are welcome to attend the program, from middle school age to seniors.

Driver course

LEWISTON – An AARP driver safety course for drivers age 50 and older will be presented from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at Central Maine Medical Center Senior Services, 12 High St.

The course will replace the original two-day, eight-hour presentation.

The registration fee is $14 a person and advance registration is required. To register, phone Tom Harvey, volunteer instructor, at 597-2331. Class size is limited to 25 participants and registrations will be accepted as long as space is still available.

The AARP class helps drivers learn about defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, rules of the road, and it helps older drivers learn how to adjust their driving to age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Insurance companies in Maine are required to give discounts to drivers 55 and older who complete the course.

Fundraising walk

LEWISTON – The Brain Injury Association of Maine will hold its 19th annual fundraising event, The Walk for Thought, on Saturday, March 21.

Participants will be offered the opportunity to walk inside and the event will take place rain or snow. Walker check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. with an official kick-off starting at 9:25. A light breakfast will be available and lunch will be donated by local businesses.

Money raised will help support programs and activities for survivors and family members and brain injury prevention programs for children.
