I enjoyed so much going to the contradancing at the Lewiston Public Library on Feb. 28, organized by Cindy LaRock. It brought back memories of my girlhood, attending dances at the Grange Hall in the small farm town of Bakersfield, Vt., where I grew up.

I belonged to the Grange organization in Bakersfield, and we often had square dances. I can remember dancing with my then boyfriend, Merrill, who was a great dancer.

Another memory I have from oft-told stories is that my grandfather was a caller at old-fashioned square dances. He also played the fiddle. Long ago, in the small town where I grew up, we did not have movie theaters or television to entertain us, so we got together often as a community to enjoy each other’s company.

It was such fun to see young children with their parents and grandparents dancing and enjoying the music of the fiddlers. The span of ages at the contradance at the library was wonderful. There were babies just a year old, while I was probably the oldest in attendance, at age 91.

I think it is so wonderful that Lewiston supports these cultural programs to bring all different community members together to enjoy cultural performances such as the recent square dancing. The memories it brought back from my girlhood in Vermont were memories I had not thought about in ages.
