WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) – Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett has started running on a treadmill but is expected to miss at least another week with a strained right knee.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Friday that Garnett reported feeling “great” after running on a treadmill Thursday for the first time since hurting the knee Feb. 19 at Utah.
Rivers said Garnett is still day to day. Garnett strained the posterior muscle of the knee while going up for an alley-oop late in the first half of a 90-85 loss to the Jazz.
The Celtics are 4-2 without Garnett and host the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night.
Losing Garnett and two other players in the rotation could have been a more damaging blow to the Celtics’ repeat hopes, but they had already positioned themselves to get help if they needed it.
“We’re lucky, but we made our luck. The reason we can pick up a Steph and a Mikki is we have a winning record and we have hope of winning a title,” Rivers said.
“Two years ago, I guarantee you neither guy would have come to us, so you have to put yourself in that position and we did with winning.”
