RUMFORD – A Rumford man arrested last month in connection with a burglary and theft of nine firearms in Mexico, was back in jail Friday after an assistant district attorney in Paris accused him of threatening to kill a witness or informant in the case.
While investigating a 3:30 p.m. threatening complaint Thursday, Rumford police Detective James Bernard arrested Aaron Brasuell, 32, an hour later at a Falmouth Street home and charged him with two counts of violating bail conditions, criminal mischief damage to a police cruiser, and possessing a suspended driver’s license.
Bernard said Brasuell, who was ordered not to have contact with the witness or possess dangerous weapons, violated that by contacting the witness. A pat-down search also found he was carrying two knives and a homemade shank, which Bernard described as a screwdriver with the point ground down.
At his initial appearance Friday in Paris District Court, the criminal mischief charge involving spitting on a police cruiser and suspended driver’s license charge were both dropped.
Violation of bail conditions charges against Brasuell were then amended to include felony charges of criminal threatening and tampering with a state witness or informant.
Judge Paul A. Cote then set bail of either $5,000 cash or $50,000 worth of real estate. Brasuell was unable to make bail and was returned to jail. Due to the felony charges, he will later be arraigned in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
On Feb. 2, Brasuell was arrested by Mexico police on a charge of receiving stolen property in connection with a late January burglary and theft of eight handguns and a rifle from Casey’s Auto and Gun Shop on Roxbury Road in Mexico. The guns were valued at more than $3,000.
Others arrested in that case and awaiting trial are Nation Miller, 21, Tyler Miller, 46, (no relation), and Nelson Rivera, 20, all of Mexico, and Keith Provencher, 26, of Rumford.
Provencher and Nation Miller are each charged with burglary, theft and vandalism; Rivera is charged with receiving stolen property; and Tyler Miller is charged with receiving stolen property, criminal simulation, or removing a serial number, burglary accomplice liability by allowing use of his vehicle to move stolen property, and possession of firearms by a prohibited person.
