NEW GLOUCESTER – A Saturday morning fire left a Mcintire Road family homeless.

Gary Sacco, New Gloucester Fire and Rescue chief, said the fire was reported at 10:26 a.m. at 61 Mcintire Road, a double-wide mobile home.

“It started out as a bedroom fire, one of the smaller children’s bedrooms,” Sacco said. “One of the adults was sitting out there, and the child came out and said their room was on fire.”

The building was home to Michael and Sheila Perkins. Sacco said all seven of the occupants managed to escape. Fire crews were on the scene 10 minutes after the blaze was reported and had it extinguished by 11:15 a.m.

“But we had a lot of stuff to overhaul,” he said. “We had to open up walls and a lot of furniture and personal belonging to make sure the fire was out. The house was a total loss due to smoke and fire damage.”

Fire crews from New Gloucester, Durham, Pownal and Gray responded to the scene. Crews from Poland were on call for other calls in New Gloucester during the fire.

The American Red Cross was assisting the family.

“They’re making arrangements with other family members in the area, making sure everyone has a place to stay,” Sacco said.
