BAILEYVILLE (AP) – Gov. John Baldacci is vowing to help the 300 workers who stand to lose their jobs when the Domtar Corp. pulp mill shuts down May 5 for an indefinite period because of weak global demand, high inventory levels and depressed prices.
Baldacci visited Baileyville on Monday, meeting with mill management, union leaders, workers and local officials.
The governor said the state’s main concern is for those affected by the closing and to make sure that help is provided to workers and their families.
He said the state will send a rapid response team to the town Thursday to set up meetings with workers to assist with unemployment claims, health care coverage and benefits.
