LEWISTON – The Lewiston Maineiacs’ living arrangements for the next couple of years may still be up in the air to some degree, but on the ice, the team knows two things for certain: It will play Baie-Comeau and Chicoutimi this weekend at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, and if the Maineiacs win both games, they’ll get to play more games in Lewiston.

“Typically, this time of year, teams will say, ‘Of course, we want things in our own hands,'” Lewiston coach Don MacAdam said. “We do, and we have it, and I’ve seen more focus with the players over the last couple of weeks than at any point since the middle of January.”

With two games remaining, the Lewiston Maineiacs are tied with Val d’Or for the 16th and final playoff spot in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Halifax Mooseheads are also still involved in the race, with three games to play over their final three days of the season. The Mooseheads lost, 7-5, on Wednesday against PEI.

“Lots of people will say they’re not scoreboard watching, but everybody does,” MacAdam said. “You just do, even though we know, for example, that making the playoffs is in our hands. We also know that Val d’Or is saying the same thing, that they have to win both just to have the chance.”

Val d’Or and Lewiston are even at 46 points, while Halifax trails the pair by just three. Lewiston holds the tiebreaker over both squads in the number of total wins.

If the Maineiacs qualify for the postseason, the team’s first-round opponent will likely be Drummondville. The Voltigeurs are four points ahead of Shawinigan for first place in the Telus Central, with two games remaining for each team. Shawinigan can still catch the Volts with a pair of wins and a pair of Drummondville losses in regulation.

“We’re not even thinking about that at this point, though,” MacAdam said.

Instead, the coach said, the team is looking inward. And MacAdam likes what he sees.

“When I’d watched them play, the two previous games (before being hired), they played well enough to lose,” MacAdam said. “They didn’t embarrass themselves, they worked hard, but they played well enough to lose. Now, I see a team that’s playing well enough to win.”

The Drakkar clinched a playoff spot last weekend, and have played well of late, earning points in seven of their last 10 games.

“I thought that game was going to be the game of the season, with both teams fighting for a playoff spot,” MacAdam said. “They’ve won games they’ve had to win, and we know we’re playing a team that’s playing their best hockey right now.”

Chicoutimi has just one more win than Lewiston, but has lost in overtime or in a shootout 12 times to Lewiston’s two. The Sags are currently 12th in the league’s general standings.
