NEW VINEYARD – Voters will gather for the annual town meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Smith Memorial Hall.

Voters will be asked how they want the town to pay the county tax as the county changes its fiscal year from the calendar to July 1 to June 30, Selectman Fay Adams said.

A tax from July 1 to June 30 amounts to $57,918 for the town, with another $28,959 needed for January to June this year. Towns have been offered the opportunity to finance the extra amount over five years or they can pay the entire amount.

To avoid paying interest charges, the board recommends paying the full 18 months. Usually the tax is paid and included in the town’s list of assessments and is not an article in the warrant, she said.

Winter plowing will also be discussed, she said. Previously Nile Logging was hired for the job, but the company isn’t going to do it anymore.

Voters will be asked to raise and appropriate $120,000 for snowplowing and sanding, but that is only an estimate, she said. The board is determining needs to start a bid process but due to the economy, selectmen intend to bring figures to the town during a special town meeting in June, she said.

In another article, the fire chief wants voters to consider raising the amount paid to firefighters from $6 to $10 hourly. The article does seek extra funds since the money would be taken from the fire budget, she said.

Fire budget funds not spent go into a reserve account for future equipment purchases. The increase could mean less added to that reserve, she said.

Town officers to be elected are a selectman for three years and a road commissioner. Lowell Dubay and Earl Luce Jr., respectively, hold those positions.

Three Planning Board members will be elected. The positions are now held by Richard Hargreaves, Jonathon Cavanaugh and Patricia Knapp.

A SAD 9 director for a three-year term will also be chosen. Scott Webber currently holds that seat.
