PORTLAND (AP) – The National Alliance on Mental Illness is giving Maine a B grade for providing care to mentally ill people.

Maine is one of just six states to get a B from the national organization. The average grade nationally is D.

The alliance says Maine’s made strides in working with the criminal justice system to make sure the mentally ill get help and aren’t just jailed.

The alliance’s executive director in Maine, Carol Carothers, said she’s concerned that budget cuts could impact mental health services, and the state could lose the progress it’s made.

The alliance also says actress Glenn Close will be its celebrity ambassador at its annual Maine Walks event May 9 in Portland.
