LEWISTON – This wasn’t exactly what the Lewiston Maineiacs had in mind.
With the fate of their playoff push squarely in their own hands, the Maineiacs fell flat Friday, allowing six goals in a 6-2 setback to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in front of 2,544 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
“That was 60 minutes we were not looking for,” Lewiston coach Don MacAdam said. “I would never have guessed, after the week we had in practice, that we would play the way we played tonight.”
The Maineiacs’ playoff hopes do remain alive, though. Halifax lost in a shootout to Saint John on Friday, earning one point to finish the night with 44. Val d’Or lost to a high-flying Victoriaville team, 8-5, on Friday. The Maineiacs and Foreurs remain tied with 46 points, and Lewiston holds the tiebreaker with the most wins.
“Sunday’s still a game, and we have a chance to redeem ourselves,” MacAdam said.
At the Colisee, the Maineiacs ran into the hottest team in the bottom half of the QMJHL standings Friday. The Drakkar have taken points in eight of their last 11 games, including a stunning win against Drummondville.
“Lately, our goal has been to try to collect as many points as we can, with the tight race for the playoffs,” Baie-Comeau coach Eric Dubois said.
The Drakkar jumped on Lewiston early, too, chasing goalkeeper Adrien Lemay midway through the second period after scoring five times on 19 shots.
“The last few years in the building, we’ve been in trouble because of bad starts,” Dubois said. “We wanted to be strong early, to make sure they knew we were in the game.”
Baie-Comeau got things rolling with a pair of goals in the first, one each from Mike Villeneuve and Stephane Michaud. Save for a decent scoring chance at the tail end of the opening frame, the Maineiacs did very little to keep up with the Drakkar.
In the second, after a quick goal, Lewiston’s Marc Bourgeois netted his 12th of the year to give the home team a bit of hope, and a little extra jump in its step.
The Drakkar sailed away with that hope and the Maineiacs’ chances to come back with two more in the second, though, and despite a late goal from Bourgeois – his second of the period – they held a three-goal edge into the final period.
“The fourth goal was big for us,” Dubois said. “It gave them a cold shower, so to speak, it took their momentum away.”
Baie-Comeau added one more in the third against Peter Delmas, who made nine saves in relief of Lemay.
Lewiston plays its final regular-season game this season against Chicoutimi on Sunday at 4 p.m.
