ROCKPORT – Lawrence W. Chapman, 83, of Rockland, died peacefully on Saturday, March 7 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Lawrence was born Oct. 17, 1925, the son of Loren W. and Edith Partridge Chapman of Thomaston. He graduated from Thomaston high school in 1943.

Following graduation, Lawrence entered the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Hancock in the Pacific and Asiatic theaters during World War II.

On Nov. 6, 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, Eleanor N. Tracy. Upon returning from the military, Lawrence graduated from the Maine State Police Academy in 1948 and retired from the Maine State Police, Troop D, in 1968.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; their three daughters, Paula Maxcy and her husband, Charles, of Warren, Deborah Gagne of Pittston and Belinda Chapman of South Thomaston; one sister, Vera Young and her husband, William, of Cushing; seven grandchildren, Steven Maxcy and his wife, Deborah, of Saco, Darren Maxcy and his wife, Kimberly, of Bristol, Michelle DeBlois and her husband, Marc, of Turner, Kathryn LaRiviere and her husband, Joseph, of Lewiston, Jason Cook of Riverside, Calif., Jeremy Cook and his fiancée, Tanya Panichpakdee, of Chicago, Ill. and Stephanie Cook of South Thomaston; 11 great-grandchildren, Kalob, Katlyn, Karidene, Barrett, Dennison, Lydia, Drew, Kaitlyn, Hannah, Connor and Nadia; many nieces and nephews; and his Amazon parrot, Poko.

He was predeceased by his sister, (Dorothy) Maxine Mahoney in 2005 and his brother, Walter A. Chapman in 2007.
