PORTLAND (AP) – The chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Health is applauding the Obama administration’s decision to drop a plan to charge third-party insurers for treatment of service-connected disabilities or illnesses.

Rep. Mike Michaud had earlier criticized the proposal as “unconscionable” and said the nation must not back away from its legal and moral obligation to veterans.

The Maine Democrat said he now looks forward to working with the administration to support Veterans Affairs appropriations in advance of the start of each fiscal year.

He said that process would enable the VA to plan ahead and avoid budget shortfalls.
