FARMINGTON – The Farmington Ski Club has planned a 70th anniversary spring swing dance featuring the Al Corey Band on March 28 in the North Dining Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington.

The dance, from 8 to 11 p.m., offers a complimentary dance lesson at 7 p.m., said Richard Forster, a volunteer on Titcomb’s ski patrol. The dance is in honor of the ski club’s 70th anniversary and a fundraiser to help purchase a new cable for the No. 2 lift at Titcomb Mountain, he said.

Started in 1939, the Farmington Ski Club is one of the oldest club-run ski areas in the country.

Forster’s son, Andrew, 42, who grew up in Farmington and started skiing at Titcomb at age 2, has played with the Al Corey Band since 1990.

Andrew Forster met band leader Brian Nadeau at Maine Jazz Camp at the University of Maine at Farmington. Nadeau became band leader following Corey’s death in 2003, Forster said.

“The last time the Al Corey Big Band played for the Farmington Ski Club, I was in school in SAD 9,” Forster said. “I remember being inspired by listening to the great musicians in the group. It’s tremendously gratifying to be able to perform in the group at this time while helping to support the fundraising efforts of the Farmington Ski Club.”

Karen Beacham of Farmington will be a guest performer at the dance.

Tickets for the dance are $12 per person and available at Calico Patch, Mickey’s Hallmark, Titcomb Mountain and Ames Home Center in Wilton.
