Ceremony held; bridge renamed

AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine Gov. John Baldacci has ceremonially signed legislation that renames the Father Curran Bridge in Augusta because of sexual abuse allegations that arose after the Roman Catholic priest’s death.

The ceremony Thursday came on a resolve that changes the name to the Calumet Bridge at Old Fort Western.

Maine Deaf Film Festival set

PORTLAND (AP) – The seventh annual Maine Deaf Film Festival, designed to showcase film and video by and for the deaf community, will be held April 4 at the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus.

Festival organizers say the student-run event provides a platform for people to learn about, appreciate and celebrate deaf culture, issues and art.

All films chosen for the festival are written, produced, created and performed by deaf and hearing-impaired individuals and production companies.

6 millionth handcuff made

HOULTON (AP) – Firearms maker Smith & Wesson Corp. says it has turned out its 6 millionth pair of handcuffs at its plant in the northern Maine town of Houlton.

The plant produces more than 44 types of restraints, inluding handcuffs, restraint chains and leg irons. They are used by law enforcement agencies, security divisions and military organizations worldwide.

The facility, which opened in 1966, has 150 employees. It also produces Smith & Wesson and Walther pistols.
