PORTLAND (AP) – A Maine man who started small and increased his drug-smuggling operation over time faces at least five years in federal prison.

Court records indicate 31-year-old Chad Marquis smuggled marijuana from Canada between 2000 and 2007, eventually bringing about 35 pounds at a time across the border.

Marquis, who’s from Fort Kent, was caught when Customs and Border Protection agents discovered seven vacuum-sealed packages of marijuana hidden under a hunting jacket on the floor of his pickup. Agents also recovered $74,850 in cash, his truck, his snowmobile and a rifle similar to an M-16.

Marquis pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in Portland.
