My hat is off to Lewiston Police Chief William Welch for making the right decision about retirement. I agree with him about retiring for personal enjoyment and to devote time to the most important part of his life – family.

Family is important and people should enjoy family members while alive. Families need their father and grandfathers, just like they need mother and grandmothers. Too many people ignore their family.

I believe Chief Welch made a good decision, one that will be healthier for the department, too. So many people are looking for work; a person should retire when he can. Let others move up the ladder and work. That gives the younger people a chance to fill the shoes of the older people.

People should research what retirement means and the rules concerning retirement income in Maine.

I think Welch made a good choice. He is a young man still, and should be able to enjoy his time. I would like to see other people looking at his deal and making the same decision. They should go hug their family members.
