PORTLAND (AP) – The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department is going to develop policies about releasing information on inmates being released from jail and the inmates’ contact with the media.

The information was contained in a report written after jail staff helped former Deering High School assistant baseball coach Frank Watson avoid a television reporter when he was released from jail on March 3.

Watson had served seven days for a conviction of furnishing alcohol to members of his team and giving them a place to drink.

Watson didn’t want to talk to the reporter so a jail sergeant drove Watson to the entrance where he was picked up by his wife, avoiding the reporter.

Sheriff Mark Dion says the action gave the appearance of favoritism.
