NEW VINEYARD – American flags will soon line the town’s streets with plans to keep them up from May through Labor Day, organizer Norma Holbrook said.
After traveling north and seeing flags on utility poles in towns like Kingfield and Stratton, Holbrook said she “got it into her head” that it would be a nice idea for New Vineyard.
The project became a joint effort between the New Vineyard North Snowmobile Club and the New Vineyard Historical Society with Holbrook and her husband, Rodney, actively working on the project since December.
A donation of 24 flags from the Galen Cole Family Foundation in Bangor, part of the Cole Transportation Museum, comes with conditions that the town must purchase the same number of flags and agree to display them from at least late May through Labor Day on streets for at least two years, she said.
Plans include putting up 45 flags, with some on Route 27 and others on Lake Street. If there are enough, some also will be on High and Church streets, she said. Three flags will be kept to replace any damaged flags.
The two organizations will share the cost of purchasing the 24 flags at an approximate cost of $38 each, and are accepting donations from anyone who would like to donate a flag in memory of or in honor of someone. A way to display the names is being decided, she said.
There’s been a good response so far, Holbrook said Monday. She’s hoping to increase the number of flags, which are 3 by 5 feet and come with a metal flagpole and bracket. More donations would provide flags for more streets.
