It’s ironic that Dave Chirayath’s latest letter appeared on St. Patrick’s Day because it was full of blarney. I won’t bore readers, as he did, with the details of Obama’s “plan.” If people are curious, surf to the DNC Web site and make another copy.
The point of the letter was yet another attempt to provide political cover in case (a) Democrats can’t get the plan passed or (b) it passes and fails dismally later. What better cover can you ask for than to blame Republicans for not being bipartisan?
They need cover because they are terrified of voters and remember well what happened in 1994.
Democrats own both houses of Congress. If they can’t pass the plan, even with help from Maine’s senators, it’s their own fault. The only problem is that pesky 60-vote rule in the Senate.
A few years ago, when Republicans threatened the “nuclear option,” Democrats squealed like stuck pigs that the filibuster was the last hope of true democracy. It’s ironic that true democracy needs a 3-to-2 majority.
Democrats can revoke the rule anytime by a simple majority vote. But they won’t because all their cover would vanish and expose their plan for what it is: a pot o’ gold as substantial as a rainbow, for which our grandchildren will pay dearly.
Sure and begorrah.
