LEWISTON – The YWCA of Central Maine will host a watch party for the premiere episode of HBO’s new drama series, “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” centered around a female character who exudes confidence, independence, compassion, optimism, determination and inspiration.

The showing will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 3, at the YWCA, 130 East Ave. Admission is free.

Based on the first novel in the internationally acclaimed, award-winning book series by Alexander McCall Smith, the HBO series chronicles the adventures of Precious Ramotswe, Botswana’s first (and only) female detective, who proves that with the right dose of confidence and determination, anything is possible. From the moment Ramotswe opens the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in rural Botswana she demonstrates the qualities of a true No. 1 Lady.

The YWCA is HBO’s exclusive U.S. promotional partner for this new television series, which was filmed in Botswana and stars Grammy Award winner Jill Scott as heroine Precious Ramotswe.

“This watch party provides a unique opportunity for us to promote the YWCA’s goal of global understanding through a groundbreaking premium television series,” said Kayt DeMerchant, director of marketing and hallmark programming. “We welcome the chance to provide a forum to discuss issues depicted in the show that are of concern to all YWCAs: leadership development, economic empowerment, gender bias and domestic violence, among others.”

There will be light refreshments and a limited number of child-care spots for children 10 years old and younger. Reservations must be made for child care and seating at the watch party by contacting DeMerchant at 795-4050 or kdemerchant@ywcamaine.org.

Besides hosting the local screening and discussion, the YWCA has partnered with HBO to honor women who inspire and influence others with The No. 1 Ladies’ Contest. Five winners will be chosen to receive a safari trip for two to the lush country of Botswana, including a tour of HBO’s filming locations in Gaborone, and a cash prize of $1,000. Grand prize trips will be provided by the Botswana Tourism Board and its partners. To nominate a No. 1 Lady, go to: www.mynumberonelady.com/index.php?ywca=1.

The contest runs through April 19.

“The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” is scheduled to premiere at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 29, on HBO.
